Scot is a widely recognized authority on the New Testament, early Christianity, and the historical Jesus. He is the Karl A. Olsson Professor in Religious Studies at North Park University. A popular and witty speaker, Dr. McKnight has given interviews on radios across the nation, has appeared on television, and is regularly asked to speak in local churches and educational events. Scott is the author of numerous books, including: 40 Days of Living the Jesus Creed, The Jesus Creed: Loving God, Loving Others, A Community Called Atonement, and The Story of Christ.
The standard evangelistic gospel is to create a sense of need in a person to respond to Christ by threatening the non-Christian with final punishment of a wrathful God. Not only does this approach fail to comply with how Jesus evangelized, but it also creates a gospel that’s shaped by one and only one gospel image—the image of God’s just judgment being satisfied. In this seminar we’ll explore how the gospel can be expressed in a variety of ways by exploring a number of images for salvation and God’s gracious work for us.
The way to discover “how” you read the Bible is to pick an odd passage, what Scot calls “blue parakeet” passages. Say, for example, the story of Jephthah. We can trot comfortably along with our Bible reading until we’re shocked by the presence of passages that remind us that we’ve ignored many passages. In this seminar, based on Scot’s book The Blue Parakeet: Rethinking How You Read the Bible, we’ll look at how we read the Bible and how Story can open up the whole Bible to us in a new way. We’ll use “Women in Ministry” as an example of passages that might startle us into rethinking how we read the Bible.
