Tips & Tricks for Atlanta

November 11 2009

Hi David - why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself and your involvement with youth ministry over the years..
Currently I live in Dallas and have 4 kids age 14 - 20.  I’ve been hanging with students since 1987 (I feel old). It all started in Chattanooga Tennessee with a group of 25 students.  From there I moved to Atlanta and worked with hs students at Perimeter Church.  Our family continued to live in Atlanta where I served as the Southeast Regional Coordinator for the National Network.  It was a blast hanging with youth pastors (that’s why I love NYWC) but I missed hands on student ministry so much I’m now back serving in a church.  Currently I’m the student ministries pastor at Irving Bible Church in Dallas, Texas

So, we’re looking for insiders tips for making the most of downtown Atlanta - you used to live there so we’re keen for some advice from someone who’s lived there!. First up, what are your favorite things to do in Atlanta?
One of my favorite places in the world is downtown Decatur.  There are several great restaurants and some “artsy” kind of shops.  There’s typically always something going on whether it’s an art show or music.  http://www.decaturga.com  If anyone goes there let me know.  If I’m not already there I’ll join you!

Of course there’s also the Aquarium and World of Coke.

We’re youth workers, we’re going to be hungry! Any great local joints we just gotta check out? What’s the local specialty?

Well, I checked in with some of my youth pastor friends close to downtown and here are some places we came up with…

” title=“Octane”>Octane is definitely the best coffee shop nearby, and it has free wifi.

Any help needed? Working with the local YWAM base here in ATL - originally from NY and attended several Youth Specialties conferences/wkshops etc.  Got a lot of amazing places here. Amazing ministry opps too if anyone interested in all that off time you will have!!
Little 5 in ATL is not too far from site (gotta drive tho) has several spots to eat. Also, find a Fellinis Pizza (several around) for a good slice or two. Pizza Fusion - healthy pizza options and gluten free selections-reasonable but not cheap as most youth workers are looking for. Vortex-you are right..good choice and good size portions. Little 5 one has a totally different atmosphere than the one closer to site-I prefer it.

forgot… Grace Midtown Church   http://www.midtown.gfc.tv  as several services for Sunday if anyone interested. Great church and a must for youth workers. Not stale and packed at evening service. Website is not so indicative of what you will find there-sorry! Also, if anyone wants a tour of the Youth With A Mission Atlanta http://www.ywamatlanta.org facility, feel free to email me. We are about 45min from conference site. Have a blast, conference is worth every tired bone in your body and every dollar you or your church paid for you to attend. Take it all home with you and inspire/change lives.
